Noma Bar is king of the optical illusion, and he's recently used his talents to create a series of optical illusion posters encouraging people to be 'boring heroes', and stay indoors. The posters were created in collaboration with McCann New York, McCann Health New York and medicine company Mucinex. The series shows people in their homes lounging around, reading books, listening to music and using their phones, and these images are all cleverly combined with images of more traditional superheroes. The posters are simple yet effective, and are definitely up there with some of our favourite poster designs. Who knew having a nap could be so heroic? "The science shows that staying in isn’t exciting, but it does save lives," says Mucinex vice president of marketing Claudine Patel. "So much more than simple words, these vivid and original visuals invite consumers to show off their superhero creds by donning capes and masks and have more fun while performing mundane tasks, such as vacuuming, making a sandwich or simply taking a nap." While the illustrations don't actually include anyone vaccuming or making a sandwich, which is a bit disappointing – we'd have liked to have seen those images incorporated with the superhero silhouettes – the clean illustrations manage to celebrate the mundane, while showing that medical messaging doesn't have to be dull. They also show that Israeli-born illustrator Noma Bar can create an optical illusion out of pretty much anything. You can see more of the illustrations on Mucinex's Instagram page. Tasty iPhone 12 leaks have been coming thick and fast recently, with most adding up to give us a fuller picture of what's in store. But the most recent wave of information contains a bit of a shocker that changes a fundamental part of the design: the size. It turns out that the entry-level iPhone 12 will be significantly smaller than anticipated by previous renders. According to YouTube account EverythingApplePro (real name Filip Koroy), it'll be as small as 5.4-inches – the smallest model seen since 2016's iPhone SE. And its bezel-less design (it seems that the notch rumours were bang on) means the compact model will be pretty much all-screen, which would certainly be great for using the best photo editing apps. But that's not all there is to discover about the new range of iPhone 12s. Hold tight. The expected product range of four new iPhone models EverythingApplePro has confirmed a bunch of other specs to get your teeth into, but recent intel makes it clear that some of the techier features won't apply to all four (rumoured) models, and will only be present in the top-of-the-line Pro (6.1-inch) or Pro Max (6.7-inch) handsets. So you'll need to be prepared to fork out if you want it all. ProMotion display technology is one of those elements, a feature that brings the refresh rate up to 120Hz – in line with an iPad. This would make certain tasks – gaming, for example – a dream. Sounds great, we hear you say, but what about the battery life? Well, Apple has thought of that, and it looks like the phone will intelligently respond to your performed task – switching between 60Hz and 120Hz to preserve your battery. Phew. And the battery is set to increase dramatically in size, anyway, to over 4,400 mAh. For scale, that's a quite a leap from the 3,969 mAh battery of the iPhone 11 Pro Max. So you won't need to worry about that OLED screen going blank at the worst possible time. A much-improved camera is in store, too. The iPhone 12 is set to have two to three times better autofocus, 3x optical zoom (downgraded to 2x for the entry-level 5.4-inch model), and a LIDAR depth sensor for improved AR experiences (again, only on the high-spec models but this may not worry most). In fact, the camera is apparently so improved that it's slowing down the product launch due to its super-involved testing needs. We can only imagine it'll be worth it. Face ID – which has been discussed a lot recently due to Apple's face mask 'fix' – will be improved, with a smaller sensor but wider recognition angles (so you can hold your phone in different ways when unlocking it using your face), and smarter recognition algorithms, too. And, the Pro Max may even have in-screen Touch ID as well, giving you more options if your face is temporally unavailable. Screenshots shared on Twitter of how the car key tech design might look One of the wildest updates over the last few days is the progression of digital car key technology (see above for how that might look on an iPhone). The Car Connectivity Consortium has published its 2.0 specification for digital car keys, and made it available to its members – including Apple. We have to say though, while it would be super convenient, this leaves your phone with the responsibility of your bank cards, communication, and now, car access. For those already skittish about losing their phones, the future will be even more fraught with anxiety. Anyway, whether or not you're organised enough to enjoy it, it's long been understood that Apple intends to make this feature a central part of iOS 14. Since that release is around the corner – and the iPhone 11 already includes the necessary U1 chip and Ultra Wideband support – we wouldn't be surprised if this feature was included in the flagship iPhone 12 models. There's a lot to digest there, and we'll be keeping our eyes peeled for more iPhone drama as it unfolds before the release date – which is, as yet, unknown. And remember, nothing is certain with Apple rumours, as we saw with the recent release of the iPhone 11 SE, which dished up its own size-related surprises. Facebook on desktop has had a new look for a while for some, but the new design is now available to everyone. And that new look involves a feature that's become increasingly popular over the last year or so: dark mode. Dark mode is popular because it helps to minimise screen glare, doesn't gobble up your battery, and can help ease tired eyes. Plenty of apps have already implemented a dark mode option (see our how to turn on Instagram's Dark Mode and how to activate Slack's Dark Mode), so without a dark mode, Facebook desktop felt a little, well, stuck in the dark ages. But not anymore. How to turn on Facebook Dark Mode It's pretty simple to turn on Facebook's dark mode. Go to Settings, accessed by the downward facing arrow at the top-right of your screen, then scroll down until you see the dark mode toggle, which you can turn on and off. Toggle to activate Dark mode You can also switch back to 'classic Facebook' in Settings, although this option will undoubtedly not be around forever. Facebook claims that its new design will help you "find what you're looking for faster" thanks to its streamlined navigation. It says that finding groups, games and videos has never been easier. We beg to differ. Perhaps it's just us, but we increasingly find Facebook more and more irritating and bloated to use. This is probably because there are so many options and things you can now do inside the app that it feels harder to find them all, and there's no option to hide the ones you never use (ie. gaming, or marketplace). At least now, when we're scrolling around the homepage wondering where on earth that group we used to belong to has disappeared to, we can do so without hurting our eyes. The arrival of Apple's new 13-inch MacBook Pro 2020 earlier this month means we're now seeing some great deals on the 2019 version of the powerful laptop. The best we've seen so far is a deal from B&H Photo, where the 2019 13-inch MacBook Pro is on sale for $1,099. That's an impressive $200 saving, and currently the lowest price around on this particular 128GB model. If you'd prefer a more roomy device, B&H also has the 256GB 13-inch MacBook Pro reduced to $1,199 – an even more impressive $300 off. The MacBook Pro is one of the most powerful laptops around, something that makes it a firm favourite among the creative community. It's 13.3-inch Retina display allows you to see and show off design work in all its glory, and the 8th Gen Intel Core processor can handle even the most complex of creative tasks. The B&H Photo sale doesn't stop at MacBooks, it's also got some great discounts on iPads. The best deal sees a late 2018 11-inch iPad Pro on sale for just $799 (a $150 saving). These impressive discounts are only on until stocks lasts, so don't delay. If you love a good deal, be sure to bookmark on Amazon Prime Day 2020 where we hope to see even more great Apple offers. Have you ever wondered what today's biggest tech inventions would look like on vintage posters? Us neither. But now that someone else has imagined it for us, we're pretty happy to have these new-but-old posters in our lives. Uswitch has taken six pieces of revolutionary tech and given them posters fit for the Mad Men era. Some of them look like they should be in our best print ads roundup, and they all serve as a reminder of just how life-changing some of this tech is. By comparing the likes of the PlayStation 5 to having an entire arcade in your living room, it makes us realise just how surprising such tech would have been just 60 years ago. Imagine having a doctor on your wrist... oh, wait We love the shocked look of the lady who learns she could have her very own personal doctor on her wrist, as well as the joyful family on the PS5 – there are no images of sole players sitting in their bedrooms, here. No, gaming is all about family fun. Who knew Alexa could sound so sophisticated? Alexa is shown as the highlight of the dinner party, as this ad makes her sound ever so suave and desirable. There are definitely no mentions of robots or data. The inclusion of the electric bike is to us the only one that doesn't quite fit with the rest, but we'll go with it, as that guy looks ever so jolly. An iPhone and an Apple – what a combo Perhaps our favourite ad is the one about the iPhone, which turns the phrase about an apple a day keeping the doctor away into a slogan about... well, an Apple product: 'An iPhone a day keeps the boredom away'. We don't know anyone who looks at their phone just once a day, what about an iPhone several times a day? Either way, it's catchy. And although we're not quite as excited by the heating ad, it does bring home just what a smart idea smart heating is. Control your heating from anywhere – imagine! You can read more about the spoof adverts over at uswitch.com. Ah, good old cut and paste. A feature as old as time itself. It's hardly the most exciting of technological processes – or so we thought, until we saw this mind-blowing demonstration of how the feature might look in reality (augmented reality, that is). In a video (below) shared on Twitter, programmer Cyril Diagne demonstrates how AR could allow a user to quickly grab a visual from the real world using their phone, and dump it straight into Photoshop on desktop. No more AirDrop. No more cutting things out. If it ever becomes available, it'll definitely be hitting our list of the best Photoshop actions. As Diagne explains in subsequent tweets, there's a lot of technical wizardry (as opposed to just straight-up wizardry) involved in the process. The software uses complex machine learning to separate the object in the foreground from the background, while a separate process is able to detect where where the phone is pointing at the laptop (for the paste element). While the software is only a prototype at this stage, Diagne has shared the code on GitHub, for anyone keen to experiment with the feature themselves. It's currently only compatible with Photoshop, but Diagne says more outputs may become available in the future. It seems we're not the only ones impressed with Diagne's sorcery (sorry, software). The team behind Photoshop itself even replied to the tweet (above). If Adobe gets involved, perhaps the futuristic feature isn't as far away as it seems. If you're looking for where to buy kids' face masks, you're in the right place. With much of the world practising social distancing, face masks have become an essential item for adults when they need to leave the house. But what about the little people? Do children need to cover their faces? And if so, are they different to adult design, and where can you buy a kid's face mask? The US' Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that children above the age of two should wear face masks when they're in a crowd. And we've got you covered with where to buy a kid's face mask with a list of retailers offering all manner of designs and patterns below. Getting your child to wear a face mask may be an entirely different challenge altogether (toddlers, we're looking at you), but hopefully some of the designs featured here will make the prospect a bit more appealing. Or maybe you'll have more luck if you get your kids to make their own? You can supervise with our handy guide on how to make a face mask at home. Smaller children, who are too young to understand why they are being asked to wear one, could be particularly tricky. There's a number of ways that you can make your child feel more comfortable about wearing a face mask, including: Make it the norm: Where possible, leave face masks around the house so they become an item they see regularly. Encourage them to practise taking them on and off, and even wear them around the house to get them used to it. Making their own: Let your little ones choose a design or pattern they like, and help them create their own face mask. Encourage creativity: If you've bought a face mask for your child, encourage them to get creative and make it their own. Let them draw or sketch some designs or drawings they want to show off to the world. Play a game: Face masks can be a bit scary-looking if you're small (and big, for that matter), so maybe implementing a face mask in play at home will make it seem a bit less daunting. Promote your child to doctor or nurse of the house, and let them look after you (or maybe their favourite stuffed animal might be better?). Like countless museums and galleries across the world, the Studio Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, Japan, was recently forced to close its doors in response to the spread of Coronavirus. But now, for the first time ever, you can take a peek inside the museum from the comfort of your own home by embarking on one of its new virtual tours on YouTube. While several closed museums are now offering virtual tours, what makes the Studio Ghibli Museum's so exciting is that the institution is famously elusive, with photography completely banned. Even the museum's website contains no photos of its rooms or exhibitions. For many, these new videos will be their first glimpse of what to expect at the museum. It looks like a truly inspiring place (and if you find yourself compelled to pick up your own pencil afterwards, our how to draw tutorials will be here for you). The first video (above) features the building’s main entrance, adorned with stunning My Neighbor Totoro-themed stained glass doors, while another (below) enters the Space of Wonder room, with trees reaching up towards a smiling sun in the centre of the ceiling. While it can't possibly compare with visiting in person, it's a rare treat to experience the museum online – and fans are certainly appreciating the gesture. "This made me cry a little," one YouTuber comments. "I booked tickets for this museum months ago as it's one of my dreams to go. This gave me a little happiness!" You can find more virtual tours over on Studio Ghibli Museum's YouTube channel. And if you're itching for even more Studio Ghibli (let's be honest – its weird and wonderful worlds are a welcome distraction from our own right now), the studio's entire output is now available on Netflix. And that's not all – an unmissable documentary on the studio's co-founder Hayao Miyazaki is now free to stream online. That's the rest of the month sorted, then. A new artwork by Banksy has appeared in a hospital corridor, paying tribute to NHS workers. The piece, entitled Game Changer, is currently on display at Southampton General Hospital, and was hung near the emergency department in collaboration with the hospital managers. The (almost) monochrome painting depicts a young boy kneeling and playing with toys. His chosen doll, rather than Batman or Superman (who remain confined the wastepaper basket), is a nurse wearing a cape, an apron bearing the red cross emblem and a face mask. With masks in short supply, don't forget to check out our guide to where to buy a face mask right now. The piece appears to mark a slight departure from Banksy's signature biting political commentary, instead conveying a simple message of appreciation. Along with the artwork, Banksy left a note of gratitude for hospital workers: "Thanks for all you're doing. I hope this brightens the place up a bit, even if it's only black and white." But rather than just a gesture, the piece is also intended to raise money for the NHS. According to the BBC, after appearing in Southampton General Hospital until the Autumn, it will be auctioned to raise money for NHS charities. Staff described the artwork's unveiling as "an emotional moment" "Here at Southampton," said Paula Head, chief executive of University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, "our hospital family has been directly impacted with the tragic loss of much loved and respected members of staff and friends. The fact that Banksy has chosen us to recognise the outstanding contribution everyone in and with the NHS is making, in unprecedented times, is a huge honour." It's been a busy year for Banksy so far. His latest piece of street art popped up in Bristol on Valentine's Day (but was vandalised a few days later), while another piece received a timely face mask last month – the jury's out on whether than was actually him, though. Not even lockdown has dampened his work ethic – his own bathroom recently became a canvas (much to his wife's chagrin). Microsoft has today unveiled a bunch of new Surface devices and accessories including the Surface Book 3 and Surface Go 2, as well as a brand new set of wireless earbuds – and they're all arriving this month. The announcement comes hot off the heels of Apple announcing its brand new 13-inch MacBook Pro this week, and the most obvious competitor here is the new Surface Book 3, Microsoft's own high-end laptop. Like the MacBook, the new Surface Book features 10th generation Intel CPUs, and Microsoft says it will have a 50% performance boost over the Surface Book 2 (which we've no doubt it'll replace on our list of the best laptops for graphic design). The new Surface Book 3 While the internals sound similar, what potentially sets the Surface Book 3 apart from the MacBook Pro 2020 is its design. Not only do you get the option of a 13.5-inch or 15-inch display (starting from $1,599.99 and $2,299.99 respectively), but the Microsoft machine includes a high resolution touchscreen and removable keyboard, both absent on the Mac. For many it will boil down to whether you prefer the OS X or Windows software ecosystem, but the physical versatility and matching high specs of the Surface Book 3 could even turn the heads of a few Apple fanatics. The new Surface Go 2 We were big fans of the portable Surface Go (check out our Surface Go review) and the newly announced Surface Go 2, with its 8th generation processor, is said to enjoy a 64% performance boost over the original. There are also some interesting hardware tweaks here, with the addition of dual studio mics and a 5MP front-facing camera. The diminutive device could end up being just the thing for creatives on the go, especially with its low starting price of $399.99. Bringing up the rear are the brand new Surface Earbuds – which are no doubt taking aim at certain other well-known brand of white wireless earbuds. Whether they'll beat Apple's AirPods on sound quality remains to be seen (or should we say heard). It's been a bountiful week of hardware reveals, and today's Microsoft Surface announcements won't make the decision any easier for creatives. Both the Surface Book 3 and Surface Go 2 appear, on the surface (sorry), to be very capable machines. You can find them both at microsoft.com. Apple’s patent filings are often a fascinating glimpse into the weird and wonderful ideas up the company's sleeve – regardless of whether or not they’ll ever see the light of day. Its latest, a bendable laptop design, could be the most radical change yet to the traditional clamshell we're all used to. Visually, at least. As big MacBook fans (there are two of them in our best laptops for graphic design list), we're always intrigued to see what the future might hold for the machine. A patent awarded yesterday describes "a single piece body having a seamless overall appearance and that includes a bendable portion" – that bendable portion being where you'd usually find a hinge between the laptop's keyboard and display. You can see the design in all its (conceptual) glory below. Browse MacBook Pros at Apple.com That's one potentially good-looking piece of metal We've no doubt a seamless, "single piece" MacBook would look beautiful alongside a flat white in our favourite café (assuming it's reopened by the time a bendable MacBook arrives), but we can't help but wonder what function it might serve beyond looking nice. If it offers extra flexibility, perhaps we'll get a few more viewing angles out of it. Perhaps it'll be more durable than a traditional hinge. To be honest, we wouldn't put it past Apple to implement the feature for purely aesthetic reasons. Not that we'd mind – we're a design site, after all. Other recent patent filings suggest Apple is putting a fair bit of thought into the foldability of its devices. This February we saw it take a rather mechanical approach to a possible folding iPhone (we don't blame Apple – who can forget the debacle of Samsung's highly breakable Galaxy Fold?) But as with all patents, all this tells us is that Apple is exploring the idea rather than putting it into practice – at the moment. Apple's newest MacBook Pro was released this week (it doesn't bend) If and when a bendable MacBook will appear remains to be seen. Until then, we'll just have to do with good old-fashioned hinges for now. Still, with the horsepower packed inside the latest MacBook Pro (released just this week), we wouldn't say anybody's missing out. Check out today's best MacBook deals below. With restaurants closed, many of us will have found ourselves spending much more time in the kitchen over the last few weeks. Whether that's a good or bad thing is up to you (we're not here to judge your cooking), but if you've long since burned through your list of specialities, you might be in need of a little inspiration. Luckily, Pixar has served up some fun recipe videos – and they may even inspire little ones to help in the kitchen. There are three Cooking with Pixar videos available so far, featuring dishes from Toy Story, Onward and Bao (the short film attached to Incredibles 2). Not only do the videos feature simple, fun instructions, but they're also filled with the kind of delightful animations you'd expect from Pixar (check out our best css animation examples if you feel like making your own). And don't forget – every Pixar movie is currently available on Disney Plus, and you can bag a seven-day free trial right now. The first video (above) teaches the viewer to make the titular Bao (who, by the way, you might have to explain isn't real when it comes to eating time). The second video, meanwhile, involves cooking a Pizza Planet pizza, helped by none other than Forky from Toy Story 4: The third recipe (below) teaches you to make a birthday cake with Onward's Ian and Barley Lightfoot. Cooking With Pixar videos are being rolled out monthly, so we hope to see a few more over the coming weeks. It would seem almost criminal not to include a dish from Ratatouille. Speaking of Pixar, we recently learned some mind-boggling behind the scenes facts about the making of Toy Story 4. If you think these cooking videos are impressive, just wait until you see how much incredible detail goes into animating a feature-length film. Did we mention that they're all on Disney Plus right now?
